I love Marmite! (advert, not taste)

Image
Marmite is the most revolting thing known to man, but my God do they know how to advertise. Yesterday I saw the new End Marmite Neglect ad and I was compelled to write a post about it. Take a look: Despite thinking Marmite tastes like the devil himself, I cannot fault their long running 'Love it or hate it' campaign. If you have read my previous posts, you'll know I love products that tell it like it is. Accept the fact that not everyone likes you, and you'll be on the right track. I think I fell in love with this ad when the shaken new recruit sobbed, 'I've never seen one that small before'. This pet rescue-style ad ticks all the boxes, mainly because it is so so British. It reminds me of a dry humour comedy, such as The Office, and I look forward to seeing what happens next. This AdamAndEveDDB campaign will run for 2013 and includes nationwide sampling, outdoor and PR promotions, and social media. Speaking of social media, don't think Marmit...

My social education

Image
I feel like my blog is a boyfriend whom I've cheated on with my job. Now I come crawling back, I almost feel like I don't deserve to write on here anymore. Especially seeing as I've also been cheating on it with Breaking Bad and Netflix's new series, 'Orange Is The New Black' - (check that out by the way if you ever liked Bad Girls). I was going to make a comeback post about the David Beckham Sky Sports ad... Seriously, what is the point in that ad apart from to show that 20 David Beckhams are even more boring than just the one? Instead, I thought I'd share several pieces of memorable and great advice that I picked up whilst meeting new people during the start of my job. These are now the foundations of my social education: 'On social, you're not competing with other brands, you're competing with people's mates' - Facebook ' Don't treat social media like it is in a bubble of no consequence ' - Legal at G...

Marketing jargon: my insights into NONSENSE

Image
Since my last post, I: attempted another Buzzfeed post to follow my previous one (it did badly.. deleted it out of shame and don't want to talk about it) turned 27 went to Newquay have been working my arse off It's fun though, working in marketing. Even though I am in social media, I am tight with the brand teams and have learnt a lot about marketing in the wider sense. I feel like everything my marketing friends were talking about before is now all making sense; I understand the lingo. Marketing lingo aka. jargon, has baffled me for years. ROI, insights and analysis, comms... I hadn't the foggiest what it all meant. It was all spoke so quickly and confidently that I was afraid to ask. Afraid that I'd be pulled into a vortex of more words that baffled me, yet left me in awe and amazement. I am now part of the club. I understand the words, the phrases, the shortcuts. And I can happily tell you now; you're not missing out. It's amazing how marketers c...

When my Buzzfeed went viral.

Image
So a very weird thing happened over the weekend. On Thursday I made my second ever Buzzfeed post. I'd been thinking about it for a while and reckoned some nostalgic photos of things from my grunger days would entertain my pals from school. I created ' 26 Things That Will Remind You Of Being a Grunger' just from a few photos I'd Googled -  a pic of Camden Market, poppers, Bolt jeans and tortured dolls - and published it on Facebook, announcing it was 'dedicated to my peeps from 2001'. I got a few likes, I got a few comments, then I got some shares, then I noticed people were sharing it on random people's walls, then I noticed people were commenting and tagging their friends. Less than 24 hours later, I saw my article had had 24k views. I searched for it on Twitter and saw streams of people talking about it. As it stands, 36 hours since publishing, my article has: 7.7k people have viewed it from Buzzfeed  39k people have viewed it on soc...

I love it hip hop

Image
It's all began 25 years ago. I was a toddler, mesmerised by a Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire film. Once I could walk, my family were forced to watch my choreographed dance extravaganzas in the living room (props included), and paid for my Jazz and Modern Dance classes at primary school. Secondary school was time to grow up and be cool. Jazz hands weren't cool. In year 8 I bowed out of dance with a mind blowing finale of Janet Jackon's Rhythm Nation in the assembly room. But the fiery love of dance was still burning bright inside me, only ever to be seen by my bedroom mirror or by drunk people on a nightclub chair. Now, I live my life of movement vicariously through those people on dance shows, especially Got To Dance (Ashley Banjo reow!), and watching dance at the theatre. On Tuesday I went to see 'Some Like It Hip Hop' at the Peacock Theatre. One word: amazing ! This is ZooNation's second incredible production after the very successful 'Into the Hoods...

Coke: making me feel loved

Image
I'm sure many of you have already seen the fantastic Coca-Cola campaign - coke, diet coke and coke zero bottles inviting you to 'Share a Coke with [insert name]'. This campaign, which shows bottles with 150 of the UK's most popular first names branded on them, is to encourage people to share the drink with their loved ones and enjoy it with friends. I have to say, I felt very special when my friend took this photo and sent it to me: Such a brilliant idea that pushes both sales and consumer emotion. I rarely buy Coke but if I happen to see one with a friend's name on it, I will buy it for them. It's such a tiny gesture which appeals to people in a massive way. This campaign works great socially. If your name isn't one of the top 150, don't fret, you can create your own virtual can on Facebook  and still make someone feel special. It encourages thousands of people to take photos and pose with their bottles, share images and tag photos - th...

Children grow up thinking magazines are TOUCH SCREENS.

Image
The reason I haven't written a post in a week is because I recently got myself a new job. I am now the Social Media Community Manager for Lucozade Sport, Revive and Energy. ... ... .. ...just pausing for a small applause there. Anyway, I am always either on a computer or my smartphone but my boyfriend is the complete opposite. He has no idea about Facebook or Twitter, and his phone is a beaten up old Nokia. Although technology is my life and career, I think it's brilliant and refreshing that he doesn't care about being involved or in touch with any of it. He will never be someone like this: Even though I am like that myself, I appreciate the fact that I had a whole childhood without it. I got my first brick phone when I was 13, and only started using social media at the age of 18 when I created my first MySpace account. I feel sad to think that 5 year olds have Facebook and that children are brought up heavily relying on technology. Anyway, the main reason...

10,000 blog views oh yeaahhhh

Image
It's a Sunday/Bank Holiday so I will take a day off from brain activity. However, I did want to have a post just celebrating my achievement of 10,000 blog views! I started this blog in July 2011 and it has been a great platform for me to speak, show my work and motivate myself. When I first thought of getting a blog I thought perhaps it was too late to start, but my friend told me to just get on with it rather than waste time worrying about whether I should have one or not. STATS!  In the past 23 months I have written 85 posts.  The top-read posts of all time have been 'Disney's Top Hottest Males'- 471 views, 'Facebook Funnies' - 321 views, Pussy is for Women' - 270 views, and 'Chelsea FC's new kit ad' - 175 views. Most of my audience have been from the UK totalling at 5494 views, closely followed by the US who made up 2228 of the views. Other random places my blog has been viewed are Germany, Russia, France, Latvia, Italy and Canada.  ...

No one actually likes you...

Image
Stop me if any of these look familiar.... You've probably clicked 'like' or answered these photos then sat there waiting eagerly for the magic to happen, only to shed a quiet tear over the fact that life remained as it was. Meanwhile somewhere in the world, a scammer is making a little profit on your gullibility. These pages are created to boost their comments, likes and fans into the thousands, then are sold to companies for their business. The company will then change all the info and bam, that unknown company has some mega super following on Facebook and it makes their online presence soar! If you wanted to like J Beebs for instance, which group are you most likely to click like? Having a strong online following immediately builds credibility. But does this mean anything, really? Having worked in SEO, I know how much clients rely on numbers; number of views, number of sales, and number of increased traffic. Clients also love to see evid...

Charity ads you'd swear by

Image
It's safe to say that there are many great charities in the world, pulling together for massive causes that could help millions of people. However it's just not possible to give money to them all, which is why charities have to go the extra mile with ads showing us the worst possible scenes; a beaten woman, a cat with no limbs or a child covered in flies. I think it is also safe to say that, as a viewer, we have become immune to these kinds of images. We all know what horror goes on in the world, but it's shown so regularly in the same ways that unfortunately it isn't as hard hitting any more. These ads rarely make us reach for the phone and act. A year or so ago I wrote a post about the first charity ad that had my full attention, NSPCC's - 'The Shit Kids Say' . Now I have been moved by Breast Cancer's Race for Life ad, 'Up Yours, Cancer'. Instead of the usual plee and sadness, it focuses on the strength of women and their fight for life.  ...
